Description
This spoon is one of my larger SERVING SPOONS. I use antique 100 year-old+ traditional carving tools usually made in England. The bowl interiors are left 'fluted' or tooled which are the marks of the carving gouge and serve as an interesting embellishment as they radiate to the center of each bowl. No power tools are used in this process. This piece is in nicely figured Black Myrtle and is all heartwood. There is also some curly grain throughout the entire spoon. The title is 'EXTRA CHUNKY IDAHO POTATO SOUP DIPPER'. It is1 3/4" deep x 4" diameter x 15" in length. The capacity is approximately one cup or so. All my utensils are signed and dated. The finish is food safe carnauba wax on the exterior with the bowl interior sealed with pure polymerizing tung oil, also food safe. Each piece is accompanied with a brochure that documents my 45+ year career of sculpting utensils and mentions that my work is included in the Smithsonian's Renwick Art Gallery permanent collection. (The fifth photo illustrates several other spoons to get an idea of scale. First on the left is a walnut spoon with a 6 1/5" bowl. Second from the left is a normal sized walnut kitchen soon which has a 2 1/2" bowl. Next is a lemon tasting soon with a 1 1/4" bowl. Last is a mesquite coffee measure with a 2 1/2" bowl. Photos #6 through #12 illustrate the work environment I'm privileged to have and some of my hand tools.)
